Western Sydney captain Marcelo has departed the A-League Men club after the Wanderers "reluctantly" agreed to terminate the final year of his contract.

The 37-year-old central defender was contracted for next season but requested a release, which the club granted.
"I want to sincerely thank the Western Sydney Wanderers, my teammates, all the staff, and our incredible fans for the last two seasons where I served as captain," Marcelo said in a statement.
"It has been an honour to lead such a committed and talented group."
The Wanderers and new coach Alen Stajcic will now need to find a new central defensive rock, along with appointing a new skipper.
Marcelo joined the Wanderers ahead of the 2022-23 season and was named captain by then-coach Marko Rudan, who departed the club this May.
The Brazilian defender was crucial at the back that season as the Wanderers broke a six-year finals drought.
Marcelo made 52 appearances over two seasons, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
He helped keep 17 clean sheets across all competitions in that time.
"A fantastic ambassador and natural leader on and off the pitch, Marcelo will forever be remembered by the Wanderers faithful for his leadership and passion for the club," CEO Scott Hudson said.
"The Wanderers would like to thank Marcelo for his contribution to the club and wish him and his family all the best in the future."
