Heavy inland rainfall unlikely to ease in time for Mother's Day

The Southern Highlands and Tablelands have received (sometimes very light) falls so far this month.

Goulburn's top rainfall for May is only 8.8mms - recorded on Sunday, May 5, however that could rise heading into the weekend.

Saturday could see the region receive as much as 30mm while Sunday is also expected to see some isolated showers.

Moss Vale recorded 19mm also on Sunday, May 5, but like Goulburn is expected to see heavier showers as the weekend approaches.

Unlike the South Coast, the region is expected to avoid the heavier rainfalls expected to impact the state over the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is predicting heavy falls along the southern half of NSW coast.

The BOM said the South Coast region can expect two-day totals exceeding 100mm on the weekend with some areas potentially receiving 200mm or more. The heaviest rainfall is expected on Sunday.

Eastern New South Wales will see an increased risk of moderate to heavy falls due to an upper-level trough combining with a moist onshore flow.

This may bring a risk of widespread heavy rain to the southern half of the coast and adjacent ranges during the weekend and into early next week.

Moderate rainfall this week will likely continue to impact recently flood affected areas and could grow worse over the weekend.

The flood risk for New South Wales over the coming days remains elevated, particularly from the Hunter through the south coast of the state - where soils are already saturated.

Isolated minor flooding is possible, but no widespread riverine flooding is expected, though the risk is likely to increase as more widespread rain impacts already saturated parts of eastern New South Wales from Friday and across the weekend.

Rainfall forecasts are subject to change and will be more accurate closer to the date.
