A new task force has been set up within Treasury to examine Australia's competition policy.
PRIORITY ISSUES
* Ways to ensure mergers - when one firm buys another firm or its assets - benefit consumers. In some cases, mergers can lessen competition, resulting in higher prices, lower quality of service and less choice. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has some reform ideas.
* Ways that the states, territories and federal government can improve co-ordination across such areas as health, skills, workforce development and disability.
* Changes to non-compete and related clauses that restrict workers from shifting to a better-paying job.
* Solutions to competition issues raised by new technologies, the net zero transformation and growth in the care economy.
