Local show nominated for AgShow resilience award at Sydney Royal Easter Show

Taralga Show Society has been named as a finalist for the AgShows NSW annual resilience award alongside the Trundle and Dubbo Show Societies.

The 2022 show was postponed in early March due to wet weather effectively rendering the Taralga Showground unusable but were able to reschedule to hold a successful event over the weekend of March 26-27.

That followed an incredible effort in 2020 and 2021 to hold editions where many other agricultural shows were unable to, something for which AgShows NSW president Tim Capp praised the Taralga community.

"This small town of approximately 450 people has shown resilience by continuing to hold the show on the second weekend in March during both 2020 and 2021, despite the challenges that COVID presented," he explained.

"They engaged a company to assess their COVID plan and carry out inspections ahead of the show, appointed extra volunteers at the front gates for longer periods to keep everyone safely distanced while they were checked in, altered the entertainment schedule to disperse the crowd, and incurred much higher costs with new overheads like hand sanitizer, signage and hiring extra amenities."

Capp said the importance in ensuring an event went ahead in Taralga had ensured their nomination.

"The committee felt it very important that the community had an event to look forward to especially given the drought, fires and that the rodeo was cancelled three years in a row," he said.

"So many shows were cancelled in the face of these seemingly insurmountable challenges but this little committee were committed to holding their show and providing an enjoyable weekend for the community, even taking extra time off from their paid work."
