Kayakers rescue family from Stewarts Crossing floodwaters near Tarago

Emergency services were called to Stewarts Crossing campground on The Shoalhaven River, some 28km east of Tarago at about 8am.

Braidwood SES, police, RFS, NSW Fire and Rescue and ambulance responded but were called off after kayakers in the area pulled the family to safety before, Braidwood SES commander Matthew Talbott said.

The campers had driven through a 'closed road' sign in a two-wheel drive when the vehicle became stuck. The family was standing on the roof of their car when kayakers came to the rescue and took them to dry ground.

"The NSW SES reminds persons travelling at the moment that with the large amounts of rain throughout the state many crossings and roads are closed and dangerous due to flood waters," Mr Talbott said.

"You should never enter, drive or play near flood waters...If it's flooded forget it."

Nearby Nerriga had received 59mm and the Shoalhaven River at the crossing had risen 60cm overnight, Mr Talbott said.

Meantime, Argyle SES local commander Robert Bell said Lake Bathurst, southeast of Goulburn, had received 59mm in one hour on Saturday afternoon.

While the Mulwaree and Wollondilly Rivers were holding steady on Sunday, he expected them to rise as water gushed down the systems later on Sunday.

Pejar Dam on the Wollondilly River received between 30 and 60mm on Saturday. Marsden Weir, also on the Wollondilly, was sitting at one metre late Saturday night and had dropped to 50cm by Sunday afternoon.

Goulburn airport received 30mm in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, with 16mm of that falling between 1.30pm and 7pm Saturday.

Mr Bell said while there was substantial rain, Goulburn SES did not receive any call-outs.

However some roads remain closed. Goulburn Mulwaree Council advised that Mills Road, Stewarts Crossing and Murrays Flat Road were shut. People should also drive with caution on Bulls Pit Road due to damaged pavement.

The Goulburn to Crookwell Road was closed for a short period at Sooley Creek on Saturday night due to flooding.

Numerous roads were shut in Upper Lachlan Shire.

One resident posted on social media that Jerrong Road north of Taralga was flooded. She was unable to advise people by any other means as she did not have phone reception.

The storm also triggered electricity outages across the area. Some 826 people in Goulburn Mulwaree and Upper Lachlan Shire were still without power on Sunday morning but this has since been fixed.

Goulburn Cycling Club's annual Trackpower meeting at Seiffert Oval was cancelled due to the deluge.

The rainfall has taken this month's total at Goulburn airport to 173mm, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
