Former Wagga MP Maguire 'loved' NSW Premier Berejiklian and talked of marriage and child, ICAC told

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is investigating allegations that Ms Berejiklian had a conflict of interest in millions of dollars in grants awarded to Wagga during that relationship.

Mr Maguire on Thursday made his first appearance at ICAC since the watchdog expanded its ongoing inquiry into his conduct to include allegations against Ms Berejiklian, who swiftly resigned as Premier in response.

Counsel assisting ICAC Scott Robertson asked Mr Maguire "did you love her?" and "as far as you could ascertain she loved you as well?"

Mr Maguire said "yes" to both questions and confirmed they would stay at each other's homes and went on holidays together.

"You contemplated marriage with her? There was discussion of potentially having a child?" Mr Robertson asked.

Mr Maguire said "yes" to both questions and agreed there was a "level of physical intimacy".

ICAC questioned Mr Maguire about his prior "very close personal relationship", which lasted between 2015 and August 2020, after Ms Berejiklian's barrister failed in an attempt to have his testimony heard in private.

Mr Maguire told ICAC he was given a key to Ms Berejiklian's Sydney home and was not asked to return it after he resigned as an MP in 2018, which was the result of a separate anti-corruption hearing.

In response to questions from Ms Berejiklian's barrister, Mr Maguire agreed that they never shared a diary or their finances and he was never introduced to her parents or family members as "Ms Berejiklian's boyfriend".

Ms Berejiklian is due to appear as a witness at ICAC on Friday and Monday.
