Goulburn's CBD proves slim pickings for parking patrol rangers

With fewer people about, just two people were slapped with infringement notices in August when stay-at-home orders came into effect, according to council data.

One of these was in a school zone and another in the CBD. However the figure also reflected that fewer parking patrols were undertaken.

It compared to July when 81 parking infringements were dished out following a total 44 patrols. Fifteen were in the CBD, 11 each at the hospital and school zones, two in council car parks and seven in 'other' locations.

A permit system still applies around Goulburn Base Hospital while its $165 million redevelopment is underway.

While Goulburn's CBD is quieter, improvements are continuing.

New seating has been installed in front of the new Performing Arts Centre (PAC).

"The seating design is complementary to the former McDermott Centre frontage, highlighting the sandstone elements," a staff report to Tuesday night's council meeting states.

"(It) will add to the atmosphere before and after shows by allowing people to congregate and hopefully continue on to other businesses within the CBD."

The PAC is three months behind schedule due to COVID and weather impacts. It is expected to be completed in about March, 2022.

Elsewhere, contractors are completing the last block of artificial turf laying and tree planting on Auburn Street, between Goldsmith and Bradley Streets. This would be finished by the end of this month, a council spokesman said.

The synthetic median strip met mixed reviews when first started. It has since been extended to three other blocks.

Zelkova Serrata, or Japanese elms have been planted in between the turf. This will continue in the current work. Tree planting will be completed by the end of October.

Also during August and September, Auburn Street footpaths underwent high-pressure steam cleaning, courtesy of new equipment.

In front of Belmore Park, Chinese star jasmine was planted around trees on the Auburn Street frontage to break up paving and mulch. It's expected to create a lush ground cover in the next 12 to 18 months.

The total work is part of the council's CBD beautification program.
