A former Canberra political staffer accused of raping a woman earlier this year has been granted bail after a mental health assessment.

Young Labor member Alexander Matters, 20, appeared via video link in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday when his bail application via his lawyer, Andrew Fraser, was not opposed by the prosecution.
Mr Matters, who worked as an electorate officer for Bean MP David Smith and is an Australian National University law student, has not pleaded to two counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
The charges relate to an alleged incident on April 10 involving one complainant.
In court on Monday, magistrate Louise Taylor granted Mr Matters bail with numerous conditions - including not to assault, threaten, harass or intimidate numerous people.
He must also not contact them or be within 100 metres of them.
Other conditions include accepting supervision by ACT Corrective Services, residing at a student accommodation complex and remaining in the ACT.
Mr Matters' bail application came after his appearance on Saturday when he was sent for a mental health assessment.

In a previous statement, ACT Policing said they were notified of the matter in August and investigators received a formal statement from the woman earlier this week.
Detectives from ACT Policing's sexual assault and child abuse team arrested Mr Matters, of Acton, on Friday after executing a search warrant in that suburb.
The charges have no relation to Mr Matters' conduct in the office of Bean MP David Smith.
Mr Smith has confirmed that Mr Matters' employment contract for a part-time role was terminated effective immediately on Saturday.
Mr Matters is scheduled to front court again on October 12.
