Goulburn sees the return to the mouse plague, and it will last for a while

Well the mice are playing even though the cats are still here.

In fact, they're playing so much, the mouse plague is back.

It seemed like it was over at one stage, but Goulburn pest control service P Off Pest owner Kym Bennett said it wasn't the case and surprisingly so.

"It died down for two to three weeks, but it's increased again," Ms Bennett said.

"You'd expect it to be over by now, but now it looks like it won't stop.

"Coming into spring, which is when they breed the most, it will boom even further.

Earlier this year, Marys Mount was the focal point of the plague, but this time round, residents on Victoria Street and Kinghorn Street also noticed mice on their property.

Ms Bennett said lockdown could be a reason for the increased sight of mice.

"I think a lot of people have been home, been tidying up places like their garages and have noticed a lot more signs of activity," she said.

So when can we expect the plague to end? Not any time soon unfortunately.

"It could go right into next winter," she said.

"This is the worst it's been for a very long time and I don't think it will die down."

Mice love water, food and shelter, so even though it is impossible to prevent the mice from coming, steps can be taken to stop them from entering homes.

"Make sure any holes in your home are sealed up, especially in the roof," Ms Bennett said.

"They can squeeze through a 10 cent coin sized hole.

"It's a good idea to purchase a door seal because a lot of them come through there.

"They also like going in through garage doors.

"Make sure pet food is sealed off too."
