Goulburn Mulwaree Council issues advice on extraordinary meetings

Councillors on Tuesday will resume debate on Wakefield Park's development application. It follows a near six-hour discussion on June 22. This was adjourned to gather more information. Unlike the first meeting, there will be no public forum.

Jerrara Power lodges scoping report for Bungonia plant with department

On Thursday, the council will consider a response to Jerrara Power's request for environmental requirements (SEARS) for its proposed $600 million waste to energy facility at Bungonia. These factors will be considered as part of the company's environmental impact study to be tendered to state planners. The proposal, which aims to treat up to 330,000 tonnes of waste per annum at the Jerrara Road plant is dubbed state significant.

A report has expressed "strong opposition" to the plan. General manager Warwick Bennett told The Post that a recent meeting with a senior state planning representative had failed to convince the department not to issue the SEARS. Thursday's report states that the department is legally obliged to issue them if a request is received.

"We (now) need to pursue this politically to ensure we get a change in their thinking," he said.

"We'll be putting all our energies into opposing Jerrara Power's development application because we don't think Bungonia is the right place.

"There may be opportunities for waste to energy plants elsewhere in the state but we don't think it's appropriate in a pristine area like Bungonia."

A public forum will be held on Thursday and those registered to speak are strongly encouraged to attend in person.

A council spokesman said numbers at both meetings will be severely limited due to COVID restrictions.

"We encourage (other) community members to watch both meetings via the webcast at home rather than attend in person," he said.
