However, nurses across Southern NSW, including Goulburn Base Hospital, were treated to food and cake on Wednesday, May 12 as part of International Nurses' Day celebrations.
District director nursing midwifery Julie Mooney said it was important to recognise the work of nurses.
"Our nurses and midwives have been agile, resourceful and shown skill, compassion and professionalism in challenging times," Ms Mooney.
"I would like to personally say thank-you to each and everyone one of them for the critical work they do and the difference they make each and every day.
"If ever there was a time to put the commitment and compassion of our nurses and midwives on the centre stage, it is now.
"While many of us have been able to stay safe at home with our families, nurses have continued to come to work for us.
"It is fitting we celebrate our nurses and midwives and take the time to recognise their round-the-clock commitment, providing a vital contribution to the health and wellbeing of us all."
Goulburn Base Hospital's acting director of nursing and midwifery Cheryl Tozer extended the gratitude to those working at the local hospital.
"Our nurses work really hard to look after patients," Ms Tozer said.
"They all look forward to working in our new hospital with a new environment."
