Goulburn Bears look to improve in Waratah Junior League second round

The Bears teams will play in the Girls Under 12s, Girls Under 14s, Boys Under 18s and Girls Under 18s divisions, and are looking to follow on from promising starts in round one on March 6 and 7.

All of the Goulburn teams showed potential in their first round matches, and Bears committee member Andrew Stewart said he expects them to get better as the competition goes on.

"Hopefully each of the teams has improved over the last three or four weeks and the results will show on the scoreboard," Stewart said.

In round one, the Under 12s Girls lost all three of their matches by very tight margins (a cumulative total of nine points was the difference across the fixtures).

Meanwhile, the Under 14s Girls scored one win and two losses, while the Under 18s Boys and Girls both managed to win two games and lose one.

Overall, Stewart was quite happy with the results from round one, and said that it was a relatively strong start considering the potential that the Bears teams have yet to realise.

"I think it was pretty good to be honest," he said.

"We've always got more improvement in us than the bigger clubs like Canberra and Illawarra. We can get more improvement each round."

This weekend's fixtures will take place at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre in Albury, with each of the Goulburn teams to play another three matches.

For the Under 18s Boys, this weekend is particularly important as it will decide who makes it into division one and division two.

Unlike the Under 14s, which began with two separate divisions, there were not enough teams in the Under 18s to split them from the start. So, after this weekend's fixtures, the top four teams will become division one, while the bottom four will become division two.

The Goulburn boys currently sit at fifth on the ladder, marginally below Albury and Wagga Wagga, who also claimed two wins and one loss in round one.

The Bears will need a strong round with at least two wins to jump into fourth place and claim a spot in Division One.
