Goulburn Mulwaree Animal Shelter at kitten capacity

A Goulburn Mulwaree Council spokesperson said the shelter had an influx of kittens handed in over recent weeks that were now old enough to find their forever homes.

"We are certainly seeing the implications of people not desexing their cats, and then allowing them to roam," they said.

"This has ongoing implications as stray cat numbers get out of control in the area."

The council urged the community to get cats desexed, and keep them contained.

"We also remind the community that both feral and domesticated cats can be trapped if they are trespassing on your property, and brought to the animal shelter," they said.

"Domesticated cats can be surrendered to our shelter for a fee if you can no longer provide the care for your cat."

The spokesperson said the shelter had a 'no kill' policy and as a result they would be "unable to accept any more cats and kittens until further notice".

The council issued a reminder that "cats that are not desexed require an annual $80 permit in addition to their one-off lifetime pet registration fee."

"If your cat is desexed by the age of four months, you only need to pay the one-off registration fee. If your cat is desexed after the age of four months, a one off $80 permit fee is required," the spokesperson said.
