Jacob Emmerton claims Interclub Series win in close finish

Twelve Goulburn riders made the journey down to the coast to take on riders from Illawarra, Camden, Nowra, Southern Highlands and Jindabyne.

Jacob Emmerton was the best performed rider for Goulburn, as he took out Division 1A in a tight three-up sprint to the line.

Cameron Roberts controlled the peloton and finished sixth. Wayne Bensley rode a smart race in Division 2A to stay at the front end of the peloton and was rewarded with a third place finish.

Local racing this week was on Range Road for the graded scratch races.

Cool and overcast condition greeted the riders at the start line at the corner of Range Road and Chinamans Lane for the 20km race out to the turnaround just past Lambs Lane.

There were only two riders this week in D Grade, with Wayne Skillman and Peter Lucas neck and neck for most of the race. With the finish line is sight Skillman applied the pressure at Baw Baw Road opening up a slight advantage that was enough to take out line honours from Lucas.

Nothing separated the C Grade riders for the entire race, as any attempt at a breakaway was quickly shut down. In a mass sprint for the finish line, Zane Jackson edged out Tony Neate and Ian Wardale for the win.

A and B Grades were combined and the B Grade riders were not overshadowed or intimidated by the younger and faster competitors.

In another tight finish, the combined peloton finished together as Emmerton won, ahead of Jason McLaughlin followed by B Grade rider Andrew Stewart.

Next Wednesday, March 3, racing returns to Middle Arm Road for the second round of the club championships. The race will be an individual time trial. Sign on is opposite the cemetery from 6pm and racing starts at 6.30pm. New riders are welcome.
