The Hume Police District is seeking to reduce the incidences of assault offences occurring throughout the community. Since the Covid restrictions have lifted there have been a number of violent incidents across the district which have resulted in serious criminal charges being laid by police.

While the overall behaviour of the community is fantastic, a small section of the community is still resorting to using violence to solve interpersonal problems. We are a civilised and tolerant society and there is no excuse for use of the violence in NSW to deal with disagreements.

Recent incidents of violence include persons who have been consuming alcohol or using prohibited drugs. These incidents often occur on private property as well as public places including licensed premises.

Southern Highlands
On December 19 2020, an 18-year-old female was allegedly punched inside the toilet of a licensed premises in Bowral. Following an investigation by police, on January 27, an 18-year-old female from Colo Vale was arrested and charged with assault arising from the incident. The 18-year-old female was released on conditional bail and is due to appear at Moss Vale Local Court on February 16.
Goulburn
On January 10 a 26-year-old male was allegedly punched several times in the face by two men on Auburn Street, Goulburn. On January 11 police arrested a 19-year-old male and he was charged with Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm (in company). Police are still yet to speak with a 21-year-old male. Further charges are expected. The matter is next before Goulburn Local Court on March 24.
Yass
On February5 a 26-year-old male was allegedly punched to the face at a licensed premises in Yass. Following an investigation by police, on February 6, a 39-year-old male from Yass was arrested and charged with Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm. The 39-year-old male was released on conditional bail and was scheduled to appear at Yass Local Court on February 12
Officers from The Hume Police District are out in force every day attempting to stop violence in the community. There are severe penalties for offenders convicted of assault offences which go from a maximum of two years imprisonment for common assault up to 25 years for assault involving wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm.
I am asking that the responsible adults in the community have the tough and honest conversations with our youth and young adults to discourage using violence. All members of the community are urged to treat everyone with the courtesy and respect they would like in return.
