The three-year-old tortoiseshell cat went missing from her home on December 30 to be found in Canberra a month later.
It's unknown how Luna made the 700-kilometre journey.
Luna was reported as a stray and taken to Belconnen Veterinary Clinic with an injury to her head.
The clinic soon found Luna was microchipped her details were not on the national register.
After some detective work by the Clinic and Canberra Street Cat Alliance Luna's family was found.
Canberra Street Cat Alliance president Vanessa Parton said she was over the moon after Luna's family was located.
"Everybody's gone over and above to reunite this beautiful girl with her family," Ms Parton said.
"Hopefully Luna will just settle back with her family and just live that love shown to her by her family."
The stars seemed to align to bring Luna back to her family.
Ms Parton's parents, Yvonne and Terry Manning, were due to travel home to Newcastle on Monday.
They were recruited to take Luna with them, to meet owner Krystan Smith halfway.
"She was fine, she had two little meows when we left Canberra then she just settled down and she travelled nice and quietly until we got home," Mrs Manning said.
Mrs Smith thought they'd lost Luna forever, and was "gobsmacked" when she learned the cat was found in Canberra.
"I originally thought it was a joke," she said.
"I thought there's no way she would have made her way to Canberra but she did.
"We're very relieved we got her home because I honestly never thought we would see her again."
Mrs Smith said the Newcastle reunion was meant to be.
"It was very surreal, I didn't think [Luna would] recognise me," she said.
"As soon as I did my little call to her she stopped what she was eating and turned around to look directly at me ... she still remembered me."
Mrs Smith says losing Luna was distressing for her children.
"They were very, very, upset when they thought she was lost, that we'd never see her again," she said
"When I called them into the lounge room last night and explained we had found her they wanted us to all get into the car and drive straight down to Canberra to pick her up.
"They are very excited to have her home."
Someone else who will be very happy to see Luna again Mrs Smith's other cat Sasha.

"[Sasha] is going to be surprised because its been so long without her," she said.
"She's been meowing during the night time for [Luna], looking into the rooms. She knew [Luna] wasn't there."
Mrs Smith says she hopes Luna settles back into her home.
"She's been through a massive ordeal ... we're going to take care of her and give her all the time she needs to settle back into life."
