The view from northern parts of the region was particularly spectacular and had many pulling out their phones and cameras.
Photographer Petar Belobrajdic went a step further and yesterday put together a time lapse of over 200 photos he took at about 8.30pm just south of Buxton, looking down the coast towards Kiama.
