After facing a tough year due to the pandemic, things have started looking up for businesses as Boxing Day helped boost their sales.
Geoff Maguire, the owner of the recently opened Best Buys store in Goulburn, called the day a "huge success". The store was opened by Mr Maguire and his wife Wanita this year after Dimmeys decided to close the store.
"It was the first Boxing Day sale for our store since we opened and we have received a great response from the community. People did not hold back and were happy to buy gifts for their loved ones," he said.
It was a busy day for Harvey Norman store as well which is located on the main street in Goulburn. Proprietor Jay David said the Boxing Day sale went well.
"People usually travel to other places like Canberra to buy a gift. We decided to remain open and support the local economy so that people can shop in town. More businesses should get on board so that people end up shopping local and boost the economy locally," he said.
The situation was not very different in Southern Highlands where locals rushed to the stores to do their shopping.
Brendan Cascarino, who is a part of the sales team at Dirty Jane store, said that while they had no Boxing Day sale, they received a good response from the locals during the Christmas period.
Meanwhile, Alarna Craig, a casual sales assistant at the Rivers store in Bowral, felt that sales have improved over the Christmas period.
"It was a bit quiet yesterday but we have had shoppers visiting our store consistently today. Things seem to be improving after being affected due to the pandemic," she said.
