BOCSAR releases 2020 Criminal Court Statistics

The NSW Criminal Courts Statistics 2020 report was released by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research on November 26.

The data showed in the Capital Region (which includes the Goulburn Mulwaree Local Government Area) there were 903 domestic and 125 personal AVOs granted from July 2019 to June 2020.

Compared to the previous year from July 2018 to June 2019 there were 904 domestic and 174 personal AVOs granted.

In the Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven from July 2019 to June 2020 there were 549 domestic and 68 personal AVOs granted in the Local Court.

The year before there were 644 domestic and 73 personal AVOs approved in the region.

Statewide, the data focused on the characteristics of defendants dealt with by NSW criminal courts.

Across NSW, the proportion of proven offenders sentenced to imprisonment increased from 11.1 per cent to 11.3 per cent over the past two years.

In the District Court 70.4 per cent of proven offenders were sentenced to imprisonment in 2019 to 2020. This was up from 63.0 per cent from the year before. In the Local Court 9.1 per cent of proven offenders were sentenced to imprisonment in 2019/20. This had increased from 8.0 per cent from 2018 to 2019.

The report revealed that from 2019 to 2020 there were 120,656 finalised criminal court appearances. This was down 13.6 per cent from the previous year due to COVID-19 changes. In the Local Court the number of finalised court appearances was down 14 per cent.

The offence type with the largest decline was traffic and vehicle regulatory offences which was down 27.3 per cent. The report showed the reduction was largely due to drink and drug driving reform implemented in May 2019.

According to the report the proportion of defendants bail refused at finalisation increased in the District Court and Local Court over the past two years.
