Dave Stanley's Kosciuszko Road Show has travelled across southern NSW to promote the race simply known as The Kosciuszko.
With $1.3 million in prize money on offer, the event offers regional trainers a unique opportunity to compete for high stakes at Royal Randwick on October 17. Stanley, a prominent radio journalist who is a passionate horseracing fan and pundit, has travelled to Bathurst, Muswellbrook, Tamworth, and Scone in order to promote the race and chat with some of the trainers of horses he believes are a chance of qualifying.
"The towns were chosen based on the horses in the market," Stanley said.
"There's a number of horses from each of those towns that are quite good horses. Goulburn has a lot of good trainers, like Tash Burleigh, Danny Williams, and Kurt Goldman.
"The byproduct of it is to support these local communities, give everyone a boost and have a bit of fun."
The three aforementioned trainers will be interviewed by Stanley live at the Hibo tomorrow, from 9am to midday on Sky Sports Radio. He will also interview a representative from the Goulburn Race Club, yet to be confirmed, about the high quality of Goulburn racing and the local track.
Goulburn is the last of the five cities Stanley has visited during his roadshow, and he said the experience has been "really good" so far.
"The trainers love it, because they get to showcase their horses," Stanley said.
"You meet all the punters the night before and have a beer with them, and they genuinely appreciate you coming out and talking to them.
"It is nice to get out and meet the people who listen to you every day."
With 14 places available in The Kosciuszko, Stanley has identified two local horses so far who he believes have a chance of qualifying.
"Kurt Goldman's got a really nice horse called Intuition, who's been in some really good form," he said.
"Tash has a horse called Al Mah Haha, and I think she believes she can get that horse in the race."
Now in its third year, The Kosciuszko has been "huge" for racing in NSW, Stanley said.
Part of the race's allure is the fact that a five-dollar ticket can give punters the chance to own a share in one of the horses racing on the day.
This innovation, Stanley said, has benefited all facets of the racing community.
"It's the only race in the world that actually covers all components of racing, in the trainers, owners, and punters," he said.
It's been amazing what Racing NSW have done, because you're encouraged to go into the local hotel, buy your five dollar tickets to enter the draw, so that covers the punters and they have the experience of being the owners.
"And it's good for the owners because they can win a lot of money on country racing fees."
Stanley encouraged anybody who is interested to come along and listen to the discussions to be held at the Hibernian tomorrow, particularly if they want to be in with a chance of winning an Akubra hat which he will give away.
