Goulburn's Meals on Wheels experiences increase in demand

Goulburn branch president Michael Parsons said the organisation was delivering meals to about 55 people each day, which was an increase on pre-COVID days.

Some 80 volunteers on rotating shifts leave the food, which can be hot or cold, in a thermal bag on people's doorsteps after making sure they're home.

"We have a no contact policy," Mr Parsons said.

"It's a shame there's no face to face contact because for some with no family, it's the only contact they have all day."

Meantime, the not-for-profit organisation introduced a new range of meals about four months ago, which Mr Parsons said was going down a treat.

The My Chef meals, from Wagga Wagga, include mini (280 grams) and main (400g) sizes, as well as desserts.

Mr Parsons said the new line was introduced about four months ago. It includes what he says is a wider variety of more nutritious meals. Clients can choose from fish, quiches, roast meals, casseroles, meatballs, apricot chicken, sweet and sour pork and shepherd's pie, just to name a few.

"People love them," he said.

A survey about the meals will soon be distributed to recipients.

Meals on Wheels currently delivers to people aged 65 and over and can supply food to cover weekends.
