Over the next month, locals have the opportunity to nominate those who they believe should join the aforementioned athletes in Goulburn's pantheon of elite sportsmen and women.
Nominations for the Hall of Fame opened yesterday and will remain open until March 20, ahead of the induction ceremony which is set to take place later this year.
The most recent induction ceremony, held in 2018, saw Kyle Cranston (athletics), Tony Beecham (powerlifting), and Allan Fitzgibbon (rugby league and basketball) added to the list.
"Goulburn has been renowned for sporting people for over 100 years, and to have these people inducted in the Hall of Fame is a pretty prestigious thing," Goulburn Mulwaree councillor Margaret O'Neill said.
Cr O'Neill was one of the founders of the Hall of Fame in the early 90s, and said she drew inspiration from similar institutions in towns across Australia.
The tradition of top athletes emerging from Goulburn, Cr O'Neill said, stretched back as far as Duncan Grey, the famous track cyclist of the 1920s and 30s.
At the time, Cr O'Neill thought Goulburn's sporting lineage was deserving of its own Hall of Fame, which spurred her and the other founders of the committee into action.
The Sporting Hall of Fame Committee has several pre-requisites which must be met before an athlete can be considered for a place in the Hall of Fame.
They must:
- Be recognised as "The Australian Champion" or "International Champion" in any nationally recognised sport.
- Nominees may be amateur or professional, but must be in an Australian Representative team (not including an Australian "B" Team) or individually represent Australia in an accredited National Sport.
- Be a resident of Goulburn Mulwaree prior to, or during National or International selection or status, be eligible if residing outside the boundaries of the Goulburn Mulwaree area, but have represented Goulburn Mulwaree or a Goulburn Mulwaree team.
- Through expertise and performance in a duly accredited selection process, gain selection in a representative team that is regarded as "The Australian Team".
- The nominee must be over the age of 18 years old at the time of application.
A date has not yet been announced for the 2020 induction ceremony, which is usually held late in the year at the Grace Millsom Centre.
