Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Bob Kirk said the project was essential for farmers and residents to the south-east of Goulburn on Currawang Road.
"The new bridge will mean a safer trip on Currawang Road, and importantly a better stock route for farmers who live in this area," Cr Kirk said.
"We expect the work to take around four months and thank the community for their patience during the project, which will give us a great outcome."
Member for Hume Angus Taylor said better and safer bridges were an important investment in the region.
"The Thornford Road Bridge has needed replacing for many years, so it's great for the community that this project is finally getting underway and will be replaced with a stronger, safer concrete structure."
There will be no through access on Thornford Road, between Currawang Road and the Hume Highway during this time period.
However a detour route will be in place for resident and business access.
The project is expected to conclude on June 27.
