The man had just pulled in to South Goulburn McDonalds, shortly before 10.30pm for a meal break, when a person in the car park noticed flames coming from his vehicle.
The driver, believed to be aged in his 50s, told the Goulburn Post he was still in the vehicle at the time.
Police said the Burleigh Heads man had been towing a horse float from Victoria to Queensland but no horses were on board.
The male was not injured but was visibly shaken.
Two NSW Fire and Rescue units quickly responded.
Deputy Captain Kerri Borchard said the 4WD was fully involved when they arrived and crews had to contain the fire to the vehicle, at the same time being mindful of fuel.

The blaze was contained within 25 minutes of arrival.
The trailer, which was carrying furniture, was then unhooked from the car.
Police said an electrical fault was believed responsible.
Meantime, local NSW Fire and Rescue stocks were reinforced with two strike teams from Sydney on Friday.

The extra 50 personnel travelled to Goulburn in light of the total fire ban and for possible deployment to the out-of-control Orroral Valley blaze south of Canberra.
They were not needed in Canberra but Deputy Captain Borchard said another contingent would arrive in Goulburn on Saturday.
The NSW Police Academy is also being used as a staging post for RFS units to be deployed to the Orroral Valley fire, currently sitting at more than 20,000 hectares.
