Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman advised that works on main road 54 had begun on December 6.
Ms Tuckerman said the NSW Government is committed to making regional roads safer.
"We are delivering the upgrades our regional roads need to ensure everyone who sets off on a journey makes it home to their friends and family," Ms Tuckerman said.
A $3 million upgrade will include shoulder widening and improve road safety signs for motorists travelling between Crookwell and Abercrombie. There will also be the added safety of barriers to prevent vehicles hitting roadside objects or rolling-over, and audible line-markings that alert drivers if they veer outside their lane.
The first section to be completed is between the Peelwood Road and the Abercrombie River Bridge, all works will be finished by mid-2022.
Roadworks will reduce traffic flow to one lane only, alternate flow, and a speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour between 7am-6pm, Monday to Friday. There will be no work on weekends or public holidays.
To minimise impact works will cease between December 21 and January 13, 2020.
Motorists are advised to follow the directions of signs and traffic control and allow up to five minutes of additional travel time.
The upgrade is jointly funding by the NSW Government in partnership with the Upper Lachlan Shire Council, and construction will be completed by Transport for NSW and the council.
