Local woman's photo captures moment of instruction

Margaret Lambert won the inaugural NSW Grandparents Day Photography Competition in the open age category.

Her winning photograph captures the proud moment when her husband Bill was teaching their 15-year-old grandson Jay the art of fishing at sunset in South West Rocks.

Mrs Lambert said she had always loved the photo, which was taken on her iPone Five a few years ago. 

“I loved that photo. I am not a photographer, but it was just a moment I saw that I captured,” she said. 

She said winning the award would encourage her to take more photos. 

“As part of the prize, I won $1500 worth of photography equipment, so I might even buy a camera now,” she said. 

Member for Goulburn Pru Goward congratulated Mrs Lambert on the win when she was presented the award at a ceremony for NSW Grandparent of the Year, at Parliament House on October 18.

“This photo perfectly captures the spirit of Grandparents Day, that of talking across generations and sharing the wisdom of older people,” Ms Goward said.

“I strongly encourage everyone in Goulburn to take a moment and view this touching image online, which evokes fond memories for young and old.”

At the awards ceremony, Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies said Mrs Lambert’s image and those of the other finalists, were chosen because they challenged stereotypes of ageing and highlight the importance of seniors in each and every community.

“There are wonderful events being held across the state before and on Grandparents Day coming up on Sunday October 29 and I encourage everyone to get involved and celebrate at a local event near you,” Ms Davies said. 

Winners of the photography competition will be included in the Art of Ageing exhibition at Parliament House in March 2018.
