GOULBURN Stags Football Club will once again be hosting their annual ‘Call to Arms’ fundraiser dinner for men’s cancer on Saturday, August 6.

This year’s theme is ‘Blue and Green/ Under the Sea’ and marks the eighth year of the event, and the Stags will also be supporting two charities, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and CanAssist Goulburn.
“The reason we chose blue and green is because the colour blue usually represents prostate cancer and green is for Can Assist,” Stags director Craig Norris told the Post.
“This ball is open to the whole Goulburn community, not just specifically the members of the Goulburn Stags Football Club. We’re encouraging people to dress up if they wish to, enjoy themselves and let their hair down.”
Club president Tony Dunn explained why the Stags chose to support two local charities this year.
“The club felt strongly about helping a local charity this year, and the wonderful work and support that the CanAssist volunteers provide warranted our support,” Mr Dunn said.
“The Prostate Cancer Foundation was another easy choice, as it has a focus on this important men’s health issue, which let’s face it, we don’t talk about much, and the fact that the Foundation has a local support group which also does great work in the community.”
Last year, through their Call to Arms Day and Secondhand Ball, the Stags managed to raise over $11,000 for the Cancer Council, with funds going towards a new cancer support directory for the Goulburn Mulwaree and Upper Lachlan areas.
The club will be hosting this year’s event at the Goulburn Workers Club, who once again are supporting the event.
In a coup for the club, they have also secured the 1974 World Cup Socceroos coach Rale Rasic, OAM as guest speaker.
Rasic revolutionised the game in Australia, and was appointed coach in 1970 at the age of just 34.
In 1974, he led the Socceroos to the World Cup as coach in West Germany at a time when only the best 16 teams qualified.
Rasic was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1989. In 2001 he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal and the Centenary Medal for "services to soccer" and in 2004 the Medal of the Order of Australia for "service to soccer as a player, coach and administrator.’
These days, as the first coach to take Australia to the World Cup finals, Rale Rasic is widely respected in Australian football.
He is still heavily involved in the game and will provide a fantastic insight into the game both past and present.
The community are welcome to come along to a great night, with auctions and a raffle plus music provided by Jamie Agius.
“We’ve got over 40 items that will be auctioned off throughout the night, including signed sports jerseys (there will be a signed Wests Tigers NRL jersey, an Adelaide Strikers Twenty20 cricket jersey and Socceroos jersey up for grabs) as well as sporting memorabilia,” Mr Norris said.
Tickets to the Enchantment Under the Sea Ball are on sale until this Sunday for $50, which includes a two course meal, and they are available from the Workers Club reception.
Guests are encouraged to arrive at 6:30 for a 7pm start.
