THE man who carried out a daring escape from Goulburn Jail on August 18 last year and who spent 10 hours on the run before being recaptured near Pheasants Nest - has been sentenced to a further five years imprisonment in Goulburn District Court.

Stephen Jamieson, 29, who is serving time for armed robbery, appeared on charges of escape lawful custody, police pursuit not stop, malicious damage of property by fire and stealing a car when he appeared by audio-visual link from Goulburn’s Supermax prison in Goulburn District Court on Tuesday.
Jamieson had previously entered pleas of guilty to all charges.
Police facts tendered in the court said during an unsupervised one-and-a-half hours (between 11:30am and 1pm) on August 18, Jamieson broke out of his segregation yard and scaled the jail’s rear wall using little more than a hacksaw blade, mop handle, sheets and a pillow.
A ten-hour manhunt ensued, with police officers across five units including the dog squad, police driver training centre, the police academy and general duty officers called in to support the search. A helicopter was also deployed and hovered above Goulburn warning residents not to approach him if they spotted him.
Meanwhile, Jamieson made his way to Carrick, where later that evening he stole a Nissan ute from a property. The ute’s owner called police when he heard the vehicle being driven off the property at 10.38pm.
Police spotted Jamieson driving the ute on the Hume Highway near Marulan at 10.50pm and commenced a pursuit that lasted 85 km up the highway, during which he reached speeds of 150km/h.
The ute was only stopped when police deployed road spikes at Pheasants Nest. He was then arrested after a short chase on foot.
Jamieson was also sentenced for a separate incident where he set fire to his cell in the Supermax at Goulburn Jail.
On October 7, last year correctional officers were called to reports of a fire in his cell. They extinguished the fire and removed Jamieson and rendered him first aid. He had started the fire in the platform of the bed by using foil, toilet paper, detergent and electricity from the power outlet.
Once he had the flame started, he used his belongings and a mattress to add fuel to the fire, causing significant damage to his cell, which was Cell 27 of Unit 9, which is in the Supermax. He was the sole occupant in his cell at the time.
On the charges of escape lawful custody, Judge Frearson sentenced Jamieson to 18 month’s jail, commencing May 26, 2021 and ending on November 25, 2022.
He gave Jamieson an aggregate sentence of five years for the charges of police pursuit not stop, malicious damage of property by fire and stealing the ute, commencing August 26, 2021 and ending August 25, 2026, with a non-parole period of 2.5 years.
He is not eligible for release until February 25, 2024.
