Firefighters believe the fire may have been caused by electrics under the A-trailer or by the truck's brakes, but NSW RFS Operational Officer of the Southern Tablelands Zone, Lachlan Gilchrist, said it was hard to tell.
It took Gunning and Oolong Rural Fire Brigades from 10.50pm until 1.25am to extinguish the fire that impacted the A-trailer. They worked in temperatures of around four degrees.
Mr Gilchrist said it was fortunate the truck wasn't carrying a more flammable cargo.
The truck driver was treated by paramedics on scene but was not taken to hospital. His injuries were minor.
Only one southbound lane was closed while emergency services responded to the incident.
Police were not viewing the fire as suspicious, Sergeant David Cowell of Yass Police Station said.
There have been six truck fires, including one fatality, in Yass Valley since November.
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator launched an investigation into truck fires in March this year following a spate nationally.
